Fast, thorough stump grinding across North Georgia β reclaim your yard for good.
Picture mowing around the same stubborn stump for the third summer in a row, angling the mower just to avoid another jolt to the blades β or a kid tripping over one in the side yard where a swing set is supposed to go. Maybe you finally removed a tree yourself or through another crew, and now a flat, ugly patch of yard is stuck waiting on a stump that's still very much in the way of new landscaping, a garden bed, or just a clean-looking lawn. Stump grinding is usually the last step nobody thinks about until it's the only thing left standing between them and the yard they actually want.
MMP Tree Service grinds stumps of every size across North Metro Atlanta, using professional-grade grinding equipment that chews a stump down below grade rather than leaving a shallow dip that resurfaces in a year. North Georgia's Piedmont clay soil is part of why this isn't always a quick job β that dense red clay grips roots tighter than the looser, sandier soil found in other parts of the country, which means it takes the right machine and the right technique to grind a stump out completely instead of just skimming the top. Whether it's a single stump left over from a tree removal or a whole cluster from a cleared lot, we quote it in person and grind it right the first time.
Stump grinding pricing depends on the stump itself and the job site, not a flat per-stump rate. The biggest factors we weigh when quoting:
A stump hidden in tall grass is a common tripping hazard, especially for kids playing in the yard or anyone mowing without a clear line of sight to it. Grinding it down removes the obstacle for good.
Old stumps are a magnet for termites and wood-boring insects, which can spread from a decaying stump to nearby healthy trees or even to a home's structure if the stump sits close enough.
A ground-out stump means a clean, mowable lawn again, or room for a new landscaping bed, a play area, or whatever you had planned for that patch of yard before a tree used to be there.
A rotting stump in the front yard is one of the first things a visitor or buyer notices β grinding it out and leveling the area instantly cleans up the look of the property.
We work across 27 cities in North Metro Atlanta and know what local conditions mean for a grind β dense Piedmont clay soil, tight in-town lots, and older neighborhoods with decades-old stumps that go deeper than they look.
Every crew works under a licensed and insured operation with ISA Certified Arborists on staff β ask any tree company for proof of insurance before they bring a grinder onto your property.
Our grinders cut well below grade rather than skimming the surface, so the stump doesn't resurface as the roots settle and decay β and we grind close enough to structures and fence lines without damaging what's around the stump.
We look at the actual stump and the site before quoting β no vague phone estimate based on a guess, and no surprise charge once the grinder shows up.
MMP Tree Service is family-owned and operated, which means the crew grinding the stump in your yard is accountable to a name and a reputation, not a corporate call center.

We typically grind 4 to 6 inches below grade, sometimes deeper depending on the stump and what you're planning for the spot afterward. That's deep enough that grass, mulch, or a new planting bed can go right over it without the stump resurfacing later.
Usually, yes, though we recommend waiting a few weeks to a couple of months so the ground can settle and any leftover wood debris has time to start breaking down. For a large, deep-rooted stump, we can also grind a wider area to give a new tree's roots room to establish.
We can leave the ground-up wood chips on-site β many homeowners use them as mulch around beds or to fill the hole β or haul them away as part of the job. Just let us know your preference during the estimate.
For most yards, yes. Grinding is faster, less disruptive to the surrounding lawn and roots of nearby trees, and costs less than digging out an entire stump and root ball. Full removal is really only worth it when you need every root out of the ground, such as before installing a pool or foundation.
We check the area around a stump before grinding and work carefully near known utility lines, irrigation, and fence posts. If you know of anything buried nearby β an irrigation line, a septic field, invisible fencing β let us know during the estimate so we can plan around it.
