Brookhaven is one of the youngest cities in Georgia, but the ground it sits on tells an older story. Voters approved cityhood in a July 2012 referendum, and the City of Brookhaven began operating that December — DeKalb County's newest municipality at the time, built on land that had actually been incorporated once before, briefly known as North Atlanta from 1924 until it dissolved back into the county in 1965. That in-and-out history shows up in the landscape today: Historic Brookhaven, laid out around what's now the Capital City Club golf course, is generally considered the first community in Georgia designed around a golf course, and its winding streets still carry the century-old oaks and hardwoods planted when the neighborhood was platted in the 1910s. A mile or so away, the Brookhaven/Oglethorpe MARTA station on the Gold Line anchors a very different Brookhaven — Town Brookhaven's mixed-use towers, new multifamily buildings, and the compact lots around Brookhaven Village, where nearly every tree is a recent planting on ground that was pavement or pasture a decade ago. Oglethorpe University, a small liberal-arts campus a mile north of the station on Peachtree Road, sits almost exactly between the two. We work both versions of this young city.

Brookhaven wrote its own tree ordinance from scratch after incorporating, and it's one of the more actively enforced codes in the region: the city employs three full-time arborists, and under Chapter 14, Article III of the Brookhaven Code of Ordinances, a permit is required to remove any tree 4 inches or greater in diameter at breast height, regardless of its condition — a far lower bar than most metro Atlanta cities use. Permits carry no fee for owner-occupied homes and a $25 fee for commercial or investment properties, filed through the city's online Project Portal; we handle that paperwork as part of the estimate whenever a job needs it.
